ok i'd better blog before my short-term memory starts acting up again. gosh, i sound like an senile patient keeping a journal in hope to grasp on whatever memories i can. :x conquest of bukit bintang! our first destination in kl, and we decided to proceed by foot. so much for a budget :D i thought that was a good choice nonetheless (ignore the money factor), because we caught a first glimpse and feel of what the capital is really like. a few observations include: coin-fed public phones are still in use. and there're sales assistants stationed outside every shop; they try to persuade every passerby to take a look at their products, no matter what they are selling: shoe, electronics or dessert. on the whole, it isn't as modern as the tv adverts made it out to be, nor was it as rundown as my mum have described and scoffed at it. it's sort of caught midway, i'd say. a town in transition into a first-class city(: i was rather amazed though, that the macs over there had quite a few local flavours like ayam... something (i can't remember :/ evidence of stm at work). so it looks like globalisation hasn't exactly caused a cultural meltdown, as the textbooks say. local cultures are, in fact, getting a stronghold, since mncs are incorporating it to attract the people of the country ((: oh and another thing i'm uber proud of is that, picky as i am when it comes to food, we haven't visited any fast food joints in our short stay in kl. unlike other overseas trips, where we succumbed to the grips of the fast food restaurants in the 2nd or 3rd meal :p so yea, this is an achievement. kudos to me, to mum, to dad! alright, the first territory that we set sights on is a huge, dark green building. lot 10 showed a great semblance to average malls in singapore, except that it's really really empty. a few shops had their shopkeepers linger in the middle of their entrance. coupled with the fact that there are no customers inside those shops, those sales assistants act like an impenetrable barrier. they deterred more than invited sales. LOL. it was rather boring, except the jackie chan cafe, where cushions were provided for patrons to lay down cosily, catch a few winks and enjoy their coffee. that's news to us that such services exist. dad said that there's a jackie chan cafe in singapore as well, but it's a wonder whether it's the same as what we saw in kl. maybe we should check it out someday (: other than that, there isn't very much for us to explore, so we left for sungei wang after a short while. sungei wang stood in such stark contrast to lot 10, it was overwhelming! the crowds there were so huge, it made it diffcult for us to navigate ourselves and find food places in the mall. dad proudly proclaimed 姜还是老的辣, since sungei wang is so much older than lot 10 LOL (: hainan (or they call it hailam) cafe was nice. my hailam mee was too green (too many raw vegetables and onions) for our tastebuds, but the hailam chicken rice and whatever noodles my mum ordered was pretty good. though my mum complained that her noodles were too bland, i thought it was ok. i kind of liked the shredded egg. the roasted chicken was plain (y), juicy, succulent and nicely prepared. but i especially liked their wholemeal bao. we couldn't really taste a difference in the bread but the difference in the fillings was obvious and they are good. the pandan kaya was a very light green, different from the darker ones that we usually see. it's a little sweet for me but still very nice on the whole (: the waitress, a young girl called fanny, was quite funny. there were a few incidents but the funniest one was when we ordered cha shao (which is normally pork in singapore). then when she served it to us, she said "chicken" and all of us went "HUH" haha. she must be exasperated when she explained that it's "cha shao". lol. we should have expected that since most things are supposed to be halal in m'sia. but it still tasted good. good cha shao (: oh my mum read her name as "funny" LOL. look who's funnier :p we were rather taken aback by the spammage of shoe shops at sungei wang (only to realise later that the situation persists in most of the malls we set foot in). there was like practically a shoe shop every 10 steps you take. at one of the shops, mum wanted a size 7 for some shoe on display. the sales assistant simply took it and went down the escalator. we were like o.O then they explained that they had 5 shops in that mall. oh ok... WHAT?! 5 shops in 1 mall? now that's shocking :x by the end of the day, our eyes were so dazzled by the multi-coloured shops, we're just glad we didn't become cross-eyed. lols :D it was barely past 8.30. we were battered but unwilling to concede defeat so soon. so we stood outside sungei wang, in the light drizzle, and argued whether we should continue down bukit bintang road to berjaya times square. one camp argues that times square is so big and so far down the street, and the malls are closing at 10pm. it's simply not worth wasting our energy making our way there. the other says it's too early, such a waste to be whiling the extra hour plus plus away in a fuzzy hotel room. LOL. we argued for so long with no conclusion. it's so annoying, i decided to just walk further down to get away from this nauseating standstill, turned a corner to find times square standing proudly in front of me. OMG. it's just there?! so what were we arguing about distance and time for? we were wasting time on that argument itself lols (: jesus, i actually wrote a paragraph on this trivial squibble HAHA. so i guess it made an impact on us: that sometimes, we should just be a little more resolute and go ahead with plans. because more than often, the answer is so close, we just need to take one brave step towards it to find it; whereas if we retreat in resignation, we may never know the answer((: it was true that times square had nothing much to offer near its closing time. i bought an auntie anne's green tea pretzel cos it's so much cheaper in m'sia. it's so sweet, my teeth ached, but i love green tea still :D -end of day 1- 1 day spanned 3 posts. i wonder how long day 2 will be :p xinying ploughed through her empty list at 10:05 pm
